First Things
First STEWARDSHIP 2010
Sometimes
we think of our giving as a way of helping the church meet its expenses and pay
its bills. This is an important necessity for our church just as it is with any
business or social agency.
The
Scriptures, however, often tell stories of giving as matters of faith,
generosity and love. Our giving doesn’t merely impact the church’s finances, it
shapes and influences who we are as people. In the ninth chapter of Acts, for
example, verses 36 and following, Dorcas is described as a person who spent all
her time doing good and helping the poor. When Dorcas dies, the women take
Peter up to the room where her body has been laid and they show him all the
shirts and coats that Dorcas made while she was alive. (9:39) Her giving
becomes part of the legacy of her life.
What
kind of a person do you want to be? Generous, or tight-fisted and stingy? Do
you want to be a person who cares for others, or someone who cares only for
yourself? What kind of a legacy would you like to leave behind even after your
death?
Our
church has recently received a gift from the family of Ken Michaelis that will
enable us to record our worship
services
on a DVD format that will include both audio and video. This is a big
improvement over our audio cassette tape system.
The
DVDs can be duplicated and brought to shut-ins and residents at the Angels Care
Center and Twin Rivers.
Our
services can also be played on the local cable channel 12 for those who miss
worship for whatever reason.
Ken
Michaelis considered it a great privilege to be here in church for worship.
This gift shared by his family in his
memory
that will link people to Jesus and to First English Lutheran Church will
continue to be part of Ken’s legacy.
The following information is the card all
CROSS youth and parents will receive regarding the Faith Step journey here at
First English. The Christian Education Board is excited to implement this
program more thoroughly this coming school year. Your child was given a
Learning Goal card and Luther’s Small Catechism to bring home on Sunday,
October 11th. If you haven’t seen these two items, duplicates are available in
the Sunday School gathering room.
